Home / Sports / FRENCH OPEN TOP 5

The Roland Garros is over and I’m here to take you through the top 5 most talk about  happenings in the tournament. We start with number 5. Quick! Quick! Lets go.

Maria Sharapova is unquestionably one of the best tennis players in the world . She is a multiple Grand slam champion and she will do anything to stay at the top even if she has to take a career risk and she did – unknowingly . What risk was that ? well Maria Sharapova tested positive for a banned substance which lead to her 2 year ban from tennis games last year – later reduced to 15months .Her request for wildcard was granted for the Australian Open and she was knocked out by Bouchard in a game that was filled with protest from Bouchard and other well known tennis players – labelling her “a Cheater”.Maria Sharapova requested for a wildcard  for her to appear in the French open but she was snubbed .Her snub went in the headlines for while and her haters feasted on it for a while until it quickly died out .That snub really broke her and her hopes of getting any wildcards to enter any future tournament .

P.S : she won the Wimbledon title at 17yrs , in your face! French Open Organizers
Number four is all about money . Do you remember the total amount for last year ?  the answer is €32m and do you know the amount for this year ? it is €36m . subtract 32 from 36 , what do you get ?  if you guessed 4 you probably a genius (you deserve applause). €4m looks small but hey we are talking about millions here . An increase in the allotted total obviously means more money for the winners . This years winners took €2.1m each as compared to last year’s €2m. More money in the bag!
The matchup between Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka in the semis was one of the longest match in tennis although  It does not match the 11hrs Nicholas Mahut and John Isner went through , the over 4hr match really took a toll on Wawrinka as he was beaten flawlessly in the Finals by Clay Master Nadal.
No Serena Williams , No Maria Sharapova and with the defending champion knocked out and sent crying( literally ) ,one would have thought this year’s womens title belonged to Simona Halep, but no there is a new girl in town and who is she ?  She is none other than Jelena Ostapenko . She came from nowhere to win a major grand slam and stunned the entire tennis world , she is only 20 yrs old and is the first unseeded player since 1933 to win the French Open

Rafael Nadal is undisputably the king of this major clay tournament or any clay tournament per se. He has beaten Roger Federer four times and Novak Djokovic Two times in the finals . Had things a little easy for him this year – like he always had . He beat a drained out Wawrinka 6-2 6-3 6-1 to win the title for the tenth time and go into the record books as the first man to win the same major title ten times . So long as Nadal lives and so long as there is clay , he will always be champion.
